Roblox Invisible Name

Can you still set a blank display name on Roblox? We ran the popular invisible characters through Roblox's own name validator. Here is what passed, what failed, and how to check a name before you spend your weekly change.

Paste the name (including any blank characters). The checker shows which Roblox display name rule it breaks, so you don't burn your 7-day change on a name Roblox will refuse.

Length: 0 / 20

  • 3 to 20 characters
  • Only A–Z, a–z, 0–9, space and underscore
  • At most one space
  • At most one underscore
  • Does not start or end with a space or underscore

Does a Roblox Invisible Name Still Work?

The short answer on a Roblox invisible name

No, not in the place most people want it. A Roblox invisible name used to mean pasting a blank Unicode character into the Display Name box so nothing showed above your avatar. When we checked on 21 October 2026, Roblox's own display name validator refused every blank character we tried, so a Roblox blank display name cannot be saved right now.

That is why so many "copy and paste" guides end with comments saying it doesn't work. The characters are fine; Roblox simply stopped accepting anything outside a short allow-list. The rest of this page shows the evidence, the exact rules, and what you can do instead.

Who searches for a Roblox invisible name

Players who saw a blank-name trick on TikTok or YouTube, tried a Roblox invisible name, and got an error; and anyone who wants the cleanest, most minimal name Roblox will still allow without wasting the one free change they get each week.

We Tested Roblox Invisible Name Characters

How we tested

Roblox's settings page checks a new display name before saving it. We sent each candidate to that same public validation endpoint and recorded the reply. Nothing was saved to any account.

What the results mean for a Roblox invisible name

Mixing a visible letter with blank characters, an old workaround, no longer helps: one unsupported character is enough to reject the whole name. The "not available" answers are different. They pass the character check but are blocked for another reason, likely reserved or filtered strings, which Roblox does not explain publicly.

Roblox Display Name vs Username Rules

Display name (the name above your avatar)

  • 3 to 20 characters. "Ab" is too short; 21 letters is too long.
  • Letters A–Z and a–z, numbers 0–9, at most one space and at most one underscore.
  • No space or underscore at the start or end.
  • Accents (é), symbols, periods, emoji and blank Unicode characters are refused.
  • Not unique: other players can use the same display name.
  • Free to change, once every 7 days. Roblox says Japanese characters are in beta for some accounts; our test account could not use them.

Username (@handle)

  • 3 to 20 characters, letters, numbers and one underscore that is not first or last.
  • Unique across Roblox and used to log in, so it can never be blank.
  • Changing it costs Robux, and your previous usernames stay visible on your profile.

Filtering still applies

Every display name also passes through Roblox's text filter. Roblox can reset a name that breaks its Community Standards back to your username, so a name that saves today is not guaranteed to stay.

How to Change Your Roblox Display Name

On a computer (browser)

  1. Log in and click the gear icon in the top-right corner, then Settings.
  2. Open Account Info.
  3. Click the pencil icon next to Display Name (some accounts label it just "Name").
  4. Type the new name, check it in the tool above, then click Save.

On the mobile app

  1. Tap the three-dots More menu, then Settings.
  2. Go to Account Info and tap the pencil icon by your display name.
  3. Enter the name and tap Save. Refresh your profile to see it.

About the 7-day cooldown

The timer starts after a successful save. Switching back to your username halfway through does not reset it; you just wait out the remaining days. Buying a new username does not reset it either.

Roblox Names That Look Almost Empty

Thin-character names

Because a true Roblox invisible name is blocked, the closest legal option is a name built from the narrowest characters: lowercase l, capital I, lowercase i and one underscore. In most Roblox fonts these read as a few faint strokes.

  • l_l and I_I: accepted in our test, look like two thin lines.
  • i_i: accepted, a little more visible because of the dots.
  • Longer mixes like Il_lI: test them first; repeated-letter names were sometimes "not available".

Alternatives to a Roblox invisible name

Outside the name field, results vary by surface and change over time, so treat these as experiments: text inside a game that uses its own name system, or text in another app such as your Discord profile. For those, copy a blank from the Braille Blank or Hangul Filler pages and test it before relying on it.

Roblox Display Name Error Messages Explained

"Display name contains invalid characters"

A character outside the allow-list is in the name: a blank Unicode character, an accent, a period, a second space or underscore, or a space/underscore at either end. Paste the name into the checker above to see which rule fails; it also lists any hidden blank characters it finds.

"Display name is too short" / "too long"

Keep it between 3 and 20 characters. Invisible characters count toward the length but are rejected anyway.

"Display name is not available"

The characters are allowed, but Roblox blocks this exact string. Change one letter (for example I_I instead of lll) and try again.

The name was reset to my username

Moderation reset it for breaking the rules. Choose a different name once your cooldown ends; repeating a rejected style can lead to further action.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you have a Roblox invisible name in 2026?

Not in the display name field. On 2026-10-21 Roblox's display name validator refused Braille Blank (U+2800), Hangul Filler (U+3164) and Zero Width Space (U+200B) with "Display name contains invalid characters", even when mixed with a normal letter. Your @username has never allowed them.

Why did Roblox invisible name tricks work before?

Older guides were written when some blank Unicode characters slipped through. Roblox now limits display names to letters, numbers, one space and one underscore, so the copy-and-paste blank characters from those guides are rejected before the name is saved.

What is the shortest-looking Roblox display name I can use?

A display name needs at least 3 characters. Thin-letter names such as l_l, I_I or i_i passed Roblox's validator in our test, while very short names like lll and o_o came back as "not available". Results can change, so test before you save.

Does a failed display name attempt use my 7-day change?

Roblox validates the name before saving it, so a rejected name is not saved. The 7-day cooldown starts after a successful change, and resetting back to your username does not restart the timer.

Can I make my Roblox username blank instead?

No. Usernames accept only A–Z, a–z, 0–9 and a single underscore that is not first or last, they must be 3 to 20 characters, and changing a username costs Robux.

Testing note: Results above come from Roblox's display name validator on 21 October 2026 and from Roblox's help article on changing display names. Roblox updates its rules without notice; if you see a different result, the live Roblox response is what counts.
